Jay's mom and my mother were bowling friends for years and that is how I came to know Jay. I am sorry to hear of his passing. A couple of stories that came to mind: The first time I saw Jay he was playing guitar. He was playing Sunshine Of Your Love by Cream. Jay was left-handed so he played the guitar he had upside down and refingered the chords so they would play correctly. It was really weird to watch. He played well though. Also, one time I was passing by the park by Peter Marshall school. There were several police cars and a bunch of teenagers rounded up. I pulled up and saw Jay and nodded. He slowly made his way over and quietly got into my car. I asked "What's going on?" and his reply: "Well, right now, I'm escaping!" He ducked down, and I drove a way, no fault, no foul. We lost touch after high school though my Mom still bowled with his Mom. My best to his sister, Terri. I hope she is doing well.

Jay Williams passed one year ago on 5-28. You are missed and loved Jay!

Many moons ago there was a baseball player named Bake McBride, from this Jay took to calling me "Baker". One night we were listening to the radio and Warren Zevon told a story about being in heavy turbulence while flying to a gig, and praying to God "Please don't let me die and have Jackson Browne write a song about me". Jay loved that story, so instead he gets this really sophomoric ode.

The Cowboy loads his surfboard
A low rider in the snow
turns and says "Hey Baker"
I think it's time to go
He's a little Hank Williams
and he's sort of Jimmy Reed
Desert boots from Hardy's
A madras shirt that bleeds
Must of thumbed a million miles
no coin for gasoline
We owned that boulevard
that led to seventeen
I thought I heard it thunder
when I heard that Jaybird sing
and I was struck by lightning
on those inverted gui-tar strings

The last time I hung out with Lightin'. Jay, his sis Terry and I all lived in the same neighborhood. We went to Centralia, Crescent and Savanna. I have so many memories of things I did with Jay. I loved his Mom and she always extended grace and hospitalty towards me. I still have a voice message on my answering machine from Jay reminding me to send him all the photos I took when we were at this reunion. I honor his memory.
